As artist-turned-designer, Song Ta’s work is inspired by the uniform fashion of middle school students, carrying forward the spirit of campus collectivism, and the interpretation of national collectivist fashion elements. Song depicts the Shenzhen youth—ambitious kids, unsatisfied with the ordinary, and envisioning multi-identities and becoming spiritual leaders. The explosive growth of China’s economy since the 1990s has allowed Generation Z (born between 1996–2010) to see growing wealth without fear of the future. Confidence, boldness, and cohesiveness are the values that Song portrays with his fashion photographs: swanky on the outside, disciplined on the inside, reaching self-actualization through the development and prosperity of their community. Gen Z fashion ranges from classic Chinese gangsters to creatively imported cultural symbols from Russia and the adaptation of American football jerseys as streetwear. Song’s images showcase a modern and contemporary interpretation of school culture, defining the brand-new fashion icons of Generation Z.
