Anne Gathmann’s work consists of reduced visual signs – interventions, projections, objects and arrangements of everyday materials such as glass, plaster and metal. In a cross-media and site-specific approach, she negotiates the relationship between subjective and intersubjective, material and immaterial spaces. She is interested in each medium as a specific expression of an existence and as an event that creates reality. The exploration of form as a carrier of meaning (in-formation) and the plumbing of form to get to its openness, contradictions, invisibility and unnameability are fundamental themes throughout her work, with the ambiguous structures she creates reflecting the instability of realities.
For the exhibition, she is developing an installation that deals with the fear of contingency. In philosophy, “contingency” means the existence of a possibility without its necessity, revealing a fundamental uncertainty regarding individual action and meaning; an uneasiness that connects possibility with impossibility. Set against this backdrop, Gathmann develops architectural objects, spaces and structures composed of surfaces, modified for each chapter of the exhibition.
