The work The Mask is based on a personal experience from Iyad’s secondary school time in Syria, where students were forced to wear a gas mask as part of obligatory military training. This experience was accompanied with confusion and mixed feelings from two different perspectives. The first one was seeing his friends suddenly turning into inhumane, frightening beings similar to nightmarish big insects. The second perspective was more personal and consists of fear, shock, and a sense of suffocation inside the mask with an endless flow of thoughts. In this work, Iyad tries to reproduce the experience graphically mixing between imagination and reality, and tries to involve the viewer as a part of the scene by becoming the participant, looking through the mask.
