In 2015, when I first arrived in Beijing, I took a sign with the words “East Lake” from the eponymous bus station and installed it on another East Lake, thousands of miles away in my hometown Wuhan, on one of the largest urban lakes in China. To me, the small and anonymous East Lake in Beijing was a metaphor for the transformation of nature by urbanization, emphasized by my paradoxical performance of seemingly meaningless name exchanges. Two years later, I discovered my transplanted sign was missing. I decided to dive into the East Lake to recover it—a seemingly impossible, and ridiculous, search in the muddy waters. Finally, in 2018, after receiving professional diving lessons, I found my sign at the bottom of the lake, and recovered my East Lake from the (other) East lake. (artist statement)
